Hooded attacker kills woman in French missionaries’ home

Image
File: Scene of an attack in France A hooded man wielding a knife murdered a woman at a retirement home for missionaries in southern France on Thursday triggering a manhunt, with the country still on edge following a string of jihadist attacks. The man, brandishing a sawn-off shotgun and a knife, tied up and killed the woman who worked at the home in the village of Montferrier-sur-Lez near the city of Montpellier, a prosecutor said. More than 70 men and women, most of whom served as missionaries in Africa, live at the home. Armed police searched the building but believe the man fled, sources close to the police operation said, and a large-scale police operation was under way to find the unidentified attacker. A helicopter was seen flying over the area, scanning the ground with a giant spotlight. Investigators so far had no evidence to suggest the attack was terror-related at a time when France remains under a state of emergency after a number of Islami

A Connecticut couple 28-year-old Kimberly Onorato and 27-year-old Rory Clark were arrested by the police after cops say they were caught having sex while parked outside a McDonald's with a toddler in the backseat of the car. Police say both of them were having sex in the parking lot of McDonald's in Orange, Connecticut, this week when employees called authorities to the scene. When Orange Police Department officers arrived, employees told them they were leaving work after their shifts ended at about 9 p.m. when they noticed the car parked in the lot with two people cuddling and making out in front seat. In a statement issued by the Police, they said: "Employees said a child was in the back seat. These two people appeared to be engaged in sexual activity in the front seats of the car while a small child was seated in the back, watching." Police say the child was alert and aware of what was going on in front of him. They also said Onorato was partia

Europa League: Manchester United Thrash Feyenoord 4-0

Image
Manchester United remained in control of their Europa League destiny with one group game to play as Wayne Rooney made history in a dominant 4-0 win over Feyenoord at Old Trafford. The captain, returning to the starting line-up, became United’s all-time leading scorer in Europe on 39 goals with a composed finish to give the Reds a deserved 1-0 lead at the break. In the second half, Juan Mata slid home his fifth goal of the season to double the lead before Zlatan Ibrahimovic laid on the third strike of the night as his cross was diverted into his own net by Feyenoord’s goalkeeper Brad Jones. Substitute Jesse Lingard capped off a stunning move with a curling shot in stoppage time, as Jose Mourinho’s men ran out comfortable winners following a fine all-round display. It means the Reds, who can still top the group, will book a place in the last 32 of the competition with a point away to Zorya Luhansk in the final Group A match on December 8. Mourinho named a strong tea

Islamic cinema is booming. Can it break into Western markets?

Image
BIBLICAL epics are all the rage. “Noah” and “Exodus: Gods and Kings” burst onto screens in 2014. “The Young Messiah”, “Risen” and “Last Days in the Desert” (2016) explored the chronological gaps in the Gospels. Christ’s ministry takes centre-stage in the blockbuster remake of Ben Hur (2016). Yet Hollywood directors are not alone in cashing in on all things religious. Islamic films and television series have also experienced huge growth in recent years. “Kingdom of Solomon” (2010) proved a big hit in Iran. “Shajarat al-Duur” (2013) highlighted the first Muslim queen of Egypt, while “Harat al-Sheikh” and “Imam Ahmed ibn Hanbal” (2016) both covered the early years of Islamic history. But who makes these films, and will they ever appeal to secular Western audiences? Islamic cinema certainly has the spending power. “He Who Said No” (2015), an Iranian film about the Battle of Karbala (a Sunni-Shia clash in 680AD) had a rumoured budget of $70m. Image
It was a sad event as a man identified as William Pulliam, was jailed for the murder of a little boy. The man was jailed after he shot an unarmed young black boy dead on the street. According to The Huffington Post, William was  remorseless after he shot the black teenager to death in Charleston, West Virginia, USA. His reason why he killed the boy was just because they bumped into each other on Monday. Police said that the remorseless white man called the innocent black boy a “piece of trash.” Pulliam was jailed on a charge of first-degree murder in the shooting of 15-year-old James Means, whose aunt said was a loving teen who “could put a smile on anybody’s face.” Police said Pulliam “expressed no remorse.” “The way I look at it, that’s another piece of trash off the street,” Pulliam told investigators, according to a criminal complaint filed by Charleston Detective C.C. Lioi. James bumped into Pulliam outside a dollar store and the two “exchanged words,” ac

Rejoinder: The Second Coming of Goodluck Jonathan – By Ayantunji Benjamin Gbenro

I have refrained myself from reading Chief Dele Momodu’s weekly articles for some months simply because of his penchant for churning out outright lies or half truth and my allergy to misinformation. I once responded to his article and the furor my response generated made me to resolve out of respect as a well brought up Yoruba to avoid his articles. My reason for doing that is what you don’t know won’t hurt you. His latest article with the above title first came to my notice via comments that strayed into my TL on twitter but I never bothered to read it. I knew the penchant of our dear Chief to do PR job for the highest bidder without really being convinced about the things he writes. I cannot fault him for this because it is his job, believe me, he is very good at it. My opinion changed however due to calls I received from friends about the said article. I was forced to read it to know what could have so much infuriated a gentleman of honour to that extent. The

Zika-Related Effects Can Occur Months After Normal Birth

Infants with laboratory-confirmed congenital Zika virus infection but who do not have microcephaly at birth may experience slow postnatal head growth that can develop into microcephaly. Therefore, the absence of microcephaly in a neonate does not rule out Zika virus infection or its potential teratogenic effects, according to an article published online November 22 in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report . From October 2015 to January 2016, researchers at two Brazilian referral centers evaluated 13 babies (nine male) who tested positive for congenital Zika virus infection. The infants had normal head size at birth; circumferences ranged from 0.30 to 2.00 standard deviations below the mean for gestational age and sex. By age 5 months, however, they had experienced decelerated head growth, and 11 developed microcephaly, defined as a head circumference greater than 2 standard deviations below the mean for age and sex. "These findings provide evidence that among infa

3 Australians critically ill after rare thunderstorm asthma

An official says three patients remain critically ill three days after a rare condition known as thunderstorm asthma killed four people and sent hundreds to hospitals in Australia's second-largest city MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Three patients remained critically ill on Thursday, three days after a rare condition known as thunderstorm asthma killed four people and sent hundreds to hospitals in Australia's second-largest city, an official said. Doctors were amazed there were not more fatalities given the numbers of people who suffered cardiac arrests and struggled to breathe when a wild thunderstorm struck Melbourne on Monday night, Victoria state Health Minister Jill Hennessy said. The storm caused rain-sodden ryegrass pollen to explode and disperse over the city, with ruptured particles penetrating deep into lungs. Almost one third of patients who suffered asthma attacks on Monday reported never hav

A lower nuclear threshold

Image
It’s time to start worrying about the bomb again Matthew Symonds International The possibility of a nuclear weapon being used in anger for the first time since 1945 is still, mercifully, extremely remote. But in 2017 the chances of it happening can no longer be discounted entirely. The inconvenient truth is that nuclear weapons are a greater danger now than at any time since the end of the cold war. The risks—from geopolitical miscalculation or from rogue actors, whether a state or terrorists—today exceed those of the late 20th century. What characterised the cold-war balance of terror was the high degree of risk-aversion on both sides. After scares that included the Cuban missile crisis and false alarms that could have resulted in accidental Armageddon, the procedures for managing potential nuclear crises or accidents, including the famous hotlines between Washington and Moscow, evolved into a fairly effective safety net. Today that is no longer the case. When t

I was sexually abused by my football coach for four years – Paul Stewart

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Paul Stewart and two other ex-players have come forward to allege sexual abuse at the hands of youth coaches when they were children. Stewart, capped three times by England, said he was repeatedly sexually assaulted by a man who threatened to kill his family if he told anyone. The 52-year-old, who also played for Liverpool and Manchester City, joins former Crewe Alexandra players Andy Woodward and Steve Walters in speaking out about abuse they suffered. “The mental scars led me into other problems with drink and drugs,” Stewart told Wednesday’s Daily Mirror. “I know now it was a grooming process. The level of abuse got worse and worse. “I wanted people to know how difficult it was to come forward. It stirred up a lot of my past which I thought I had buried.” Stewart, a married father of three, said other players were also abused by the man, who was not named. Stewart was encouraged to speak out after Woodward told The Guardian he h

Trump Urged to Denounce White Nationalists Supporters

Image
Donald Trump faced growing calls Tuesday to denounce a fringe white nationalist group that celebrated his election win with rousing Nazi salutes. The so-called National Policy Institute held a conference Saturday around the corner from the White House. It had been scheduled before the results of the November 8 election were known. The group describes itself as an organization dedicated to “the heritage, identity, and future of people of European descent in the United States, and around the world.” It is part of the far-right movement known as the alt-right. One of the conference organizers, Richard Spencer, concluded a speech by shouting “Hail Trump, hail our people, hail victory!” — reminiscent of the German ‘heil’. Some of the people in the crowd clapped wildly, cheered and gave the Nazi salute. This was seen in a video excerpt posted online by the magazine The Atlantic. Trump attacked the cast of the Broadway hit “Hamilton” over the weekend when it expresse

Gerrard rejects offer to coach MK Dons.

Image
Former Liverpool captain, Steven Gerrard has turned down the offer to coach League One side, MK Dons, and has set his sight on other opportunities, including the prospect of re-joining Liverpool in a coaching capacity. The 36-year-old held preliminary talks with the League One outfit last week over the possibility of replacing Karl Robinson, but both parties decided to move in a different direction. The former England captain said in January that he was not yet ready to assume full managerial role as he works towards completing his UEFA A license. He said, “I’ve dreams and aspirations of going into coaching and management but at the moment I’m nowhere near ready for management. “When you start your coaching badges you realize pretty sharp it’s different. You’re in control of 25 men with different egos.” The man with over 700 appearances for his boyhood club made it clear he didn’t want a role to hinge on who he is, but rather on what he could offer and

Nigerian footballer cycles 64 miles balancing football on his head to break Guiness World Record (Photos/Video)

Image
A local Nigerian footballer Harrison Chinedu, remarkably broke the Guiness World record of cycling for 64 miles with a football balanced on his head. Wearing the Super Eagles jersey, Chinedu rode his bicycle with a ball on his head from the beach to the National stadium, Surulere, while fans, drivers and passers by, sang and cheered him on as he attempted the bizarre feat.  According to Chinedu, he had tried the feat in March this year but failed when he reached 30 miles, but after several rehearsals and training, made up his mind to carry out the feat again. After the feat, he said:  “My biggest motivation was that I believe in showcasing my God-given talent. I know I have the skill and I want to show the world what I can do. This one is a record created by me and I am happy that I have done my own side. And it's left for the Guinness World Records to ratify it and bring back results." Couples who conceive in Italian city rewarded with free hotel stays

Couples thinking about a romantic weekend should maybe consider a trip to Assisi, with hotels in the Italian city offering a free holiday to couples who conceive there. (pixdeluxe/Istock.com) Hotels in the Italian city of Assisi are doing their bit to boost the country's flagging birth rate by offering a free holiday to couples who conceive there. Ten hotels are offering refunds or a free future stay to guests who fall pregnant under the Fertility Room campaign. Guests will simply have to produce a birth certificate to prove the baby was born around nine months after their stay in the medieval city. "Giving birth to a child is an act of deep love, which should be encouraged despite the multitude of difficulties in life," organizers said as the campaign launched on Friday. Local tourism councillor Eugenio Guarducci, the man behind the initiative, said the aim was to encourage travel to the Umbrian town in central Italy -- the birthplace of Saint

Nigerian national, Chijioke Stephen Obioha, who was first arrested in 2007, was executed in the early hours of Friday, November 1th, in Changi Prison, Singapore after last ditch criminal motion was thrown out by the Court of Appeal on Thursday evening.   Human Rights advocate and Singapore Anti-Death Penalty Campaign member, Mr Ravi contacted Mr Jimmy Yuen, RCPM's Chairman, at about 10am on Friday morning to request more details about the mass and burial. Mr Jimmy replied that it would be held on Saturday and promised to give Mr Ravi the details once it was finalized. As Mr Jimmy did not get back to Mr Ravi, Mr Chen contacted RCPM's Spiritual Director Fr Kenny Tan in the evening to seek confirmation. The Priest reassured Mr Chen that he would let him know of the details, which were still being firmed up. At about 9pm , the Priest confirmed that the Singapore Prison Service (SPS) would release Chijioke's body to the RCPM who will hold a funeral ma
