10 Little Truths about the Friend Zone

Image
I do not care if you are male or female or trans. Being in the friend zone sucks for anyone who has experienced it. Once or multiple times, the feeling of being relegated to the friend zone, even when your heart and soul are devoted to that one human, can be devastating. Yet, once in awhile, when contemplating your situation, take a moment to remember these ten tiny truths about being in the friend zone. 1. The friend zone exists So many people like to exclaim, “there is no such thing as a friend zone, you are just being delusional or a scaredy-cat.” But, in actuality, the dreaded zone of being forever thought of as a friend or like a sibling is very real. It is a sad place to be (sorry), and causes a lot of bitterness and resentment to those who get placed there repeatedly. 2. You put yourself in the friend zone If you do not try to win their affection, you will never know if it could have been yours. The fear of rejection or coming on too strongly is what puts a lot of peop

Here’s what happens when you stop having sex

While the average healthy adult loves to have  sex , a lot of things also sometimes make us go on sex sabbatical, such that in some relationships, partners relegate that aspect of their union to the background! Yet, Marvin Gaye knew what he was saying when he sang about  sexual healing ! Physicians warn that staying off sex for an extended period can have negative impact on your overall wellbeing, such as these ones… Heightened risks of erectile dysfunction:  Naturally, as men advance in age, rock-hard erections are no longer guaranteed; but when you now have to go on long time without sex, your risk for erectile dysfunction doubles, compared to men who have sex at least once a week. A study published in the  American Journal of Medicine  suggests that, since the penis is a muscle, frequent sex may help preserve your potency, just as physical exercise helps maintain strength. So, to guard against erectile dysfunction, have sex regularly — even if it’s once a week. Depres

Quit whining, I was once a taxi driver in Nigeria, no one owes you anything- Minister of Solid Minerals, Kayode Fayemi to Nigerian youths

Image
Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Kayode Fayemi, yesterday told Nigerian youths to wake up and stop complaining and blaming government and others for the challenges they encounter in life, as nobody, neither the government, family members or any other person, owes them anything. Fayemi said this while delivering the 2016 convocation lecture of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) at the J. F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium. Drawing lessons from his own experience in Life, Fayemi told the graduates that he had to make certain sacrifices in life for him to get to the position where he presently occupies. He disclosed that he engaged in odd and menial jobs such as driving public taxis and working as a security guard both in Nigeria and during his postgraduate days in the United Kingdom. "Quit whining. No one owes you anything. The earlier we realise that no one owes us anything, the better for us and the more prepared we would be to face life’s challenges. Don’t think you are entitled to

Why the sea is salty

Image
SEEN from space, the Earth is a pale blue dot. Two-thirds of its surface is covered by water. But the vast majority of that water—around 97%—is salty. Of the 3% that is fresh water—which is the kind humanity needs to drink, wash, make things and (most of all) produce food—about two-thirds is locked up in glaciers, ice caps and permafrost. That leaves less than 1% of the planet’s water easily accessible in rivers, lakes or aquifers. In short, the salinity of the oceans means useful water is scarce, while the less useful kind is abundant. So why is the sea salty? The salt in the ocean mostly got there as the result of a process called weathering, which transfers mineral salts from rocks on land into the sea. Rain is not pure water, but contains small amounts of carbon dioxide absorbed from the air; this makes rainwater very slightly acidic. When this weak acid falls on land, tiny traces of minerals dissolve from rocks into the water, separating into charged particles called ions. The

How to Not Let Others Sidetrack You from Your Dreams

Image
“My dream is lost.” Not only has this thought crossed the minds of many, it might be going through your mind right now. Someone distracted you from your goals, and now, for whatever reason, your hopes and aspirations are distant and untraceable. There are times when dreams must be put on the backburner, but you should never let others sidetrack you permanently from your dreams. “Do not let the behaviors of others destroy your inner peace” So once said the wise Dalai Lama. Unfortunately, we live in an age where people do things for various reasons, not all of them nice. Emotions are still inconceivable in many ways. Jealousy, envy, anger, greed, and lust drive people to hurt others for the sake of their own advancement. Sometimes, that is exactly why others try to distract you from reaching your goals. They are angry you have gotten so far. Or they are jealous you are doing better than they are. Yet, seeing that these outbursts and harmful acts are another individual’s method o

Venus Williams makes history at Australian Open

Image
Venus Williams may be old in tennis terms, but she is proving once again that quality precedes age. The 36-year-old beat Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4 7-6 (7-3) on Tuesday, to become the oldest women's semifinalist at the Australian Open in the Open Era. Venus succeeded in beating her younger sister Serena's record, who was 34 last year in reaching the last four at Melbourne Park. And with Serena still in contention -- the 22-time grand slam winner meets Britain's Johanna Konta in her quarterfinal Wednesday -- a first all-Williams grand slam final since 2009 at Wimbledon is moving ever closer.

REUBEN ABATI: Once upon a time in Gambia

Image
I have very vivid memories of my last visit to The Gambia. This was in 2013 when President Goodluck Jonathan paid a two-day visit to the country. In the course of that visit, President Jonathan commissioned the new Chancery of the Nigerian Embassy in Banjul, and also met with the Nigerian community, in addition to the usual bilateral meetings. Nigeria and The Gambia have very strong cultural and diplomatic relations. We were quartered at a very nice, hospitable sea-side hotel, the Coco Ocean Resort. One of the first things I noticed was the large population of female tourists, lounging by the pool-side and the sea-side, with biceps-wielding, six-packs-flaunting young dark-skinned men on the prowl, with gigolo-ish gait and mien. A female member of our entourage who had gone to the restaurant alone, later returned – visibly shaken and alarmed and what was her problem: one of the male ushers in the hotel had asked her if she would need a man to keep her company so she could have
