BBNaija:Lawmaker - Why FG should stop ‘alien’ TV show BBNaija – Lawmaker

Image
Member representing Epe Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Olusegun Olulade has called on the federal government to reconsider the implications of allowing the Big Brother Naija Show on the Nigerian culture and youths. Olulade, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Health Services, lamented that the contents of the Reality Show were completely foreign to the indigenous culture, which the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari was trying to promote. According to him, the government should swing into action through the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC), and ensure it stopped the airing of such programme before it further caused serious damage to the culture. His words: “The content of Big Brother Naijashow is alien to our culture. This show is contrary to the rich cultural values we are trying to promote and bring to the front burner. It is sad that our young children including adults are made to watch such content. “This kind of programme

News: Makarfi is the only chairman known to us, we can never trust Sheriff – PDP Reps

Image
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in the house of representatives has said the only chairman it recognises is Ahmed Makarfi. The PDP caucus said it will be “honourable” for Ali Modu Sheriff “to pack up and go.” On Friday, the appeal court in Port Harcourt affirmed Sheriff as the authentic chairman of the PDP and nullified the convention that produced the Ahmed Makarfi caretaker committee. But in a statement on Wednesday, Leo Ogor, the house minority leader, on behalf of the caucus, said the judgement that affirmed Sheriff and nullified the caretaker committee was “discomforting”. The PDP reps said no sincere member of the party would trust the Sheriff faction after their activities in Edo and Ondo states. “It is the opinion of many that the honourable thing would be for the Ali Modu Sheriff and his cohorts to pack up and go,” the statement read. “The PDP caucus of the house of representatives wishes to state categorically that it finds the court of appeal verdict

News: Donald Trump scraps Obama's Transgender bathroom bill

Image
The Trump administration on Wednesday revoked federal guidelines which ordered that transgender students have the right to use public school restrooms that matched their gender identity. The administration lifted the federal guidelines on Wednesday that had been issued by the Obama administration back in May 2015.  It will now be up to states and school districts to interpret federal anti-discrimination law and determine whether students should have access to restrooms in accordance with their preferred gender identity or their biological sex. Officials with the federal Education and Justice departments notified the U.S. Supreme Court Wednesday that the administration is ordering the nation’s schools to disregard memos the Obama administration issued during the past two years regarding transgender student rights. The Obama memos said that prohibiting transgender students from using facilities that align with their gender identity violates federal anti-discrimination laws. The two-pag

Image
Ekiti State Governor and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Ayodele Fayose has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for heeding to public outcry on the appointment of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), saying; “Even though the President acted late, it is still commendable that he listened to Nigerians by not allowing the judicial institution, which is the last hope of the common man to be further bastardized.” The governor said: “I waited till now to commend President Buhari because I wanted to be sure that the letter seeking Justice Onnoghen’s confirmation was actually transmitted and read at the floor of the Senate. Also, I needed to be sure that the letter did not get missing at the national assembly like the 2016 budget, new items smuggled into it or it gets padded on transit.” According to a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said; “Even tho

New study says; Same-sex marriage laws has decreaseed rates of suicide attempts

Image
A new study has recorded a hopeful correlation between rates of teen suicide attempts and the prevalence of same-sex marriage. The journal JAMA Pediatrics published a study on Monday, February 20, 2017 that showed the number of suicide attempts among high school students decreased in states where same-sex marriage was legal. The findings covered 32 states that legalized same-sex marriage from 1999 to 2015. The landmark Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide came in July of 2015 While the study makes it clear this is a correlation and not a direct causation, it's the suicide attempt rates among marginalized groups that really make the comparison interesting. According to the authors of the study, gay, lesbian and bisexual students had double the dip in suicide attempt numbers than students who identified as straight. The rate fell to 7% for the overall student population and 14% for those who identified as LGBT, or what the study calls "sexual minoritie

'Suppressing free press is how dictators get started'- Sen. McCain slams Donald Trump on his media criticism

Image
Senator John McCain has slammed U.S President Donald Trump's attacks on mainstream media this week, saying dictatorship like that carried out by Saddam Hussein and Adolph Hitler "gets started by suppressing free press." Last week, Trump blasted the mainstream media, accusing reporters of distorting facts to help special interests. "Many of our nation's reporters and folks will not tell you the truth and will not treat you with the respect you deserve," Trump said. "Much of the media in Washington, D.C., along with New York, Los Angeles in particular, speaks for the special interests and for those profiting off the obviously very, very broken system. The press has become so dishonest that if we don’t talk about it, we are doing a tremendous disservice to the American people. The press is out of control, the level of dishonesty is out of control." Sen. McCain of Arizona, who belongs to Trump's same Republican party blasted Trump's critic

Former NNPC boss, Andrew Yakubu, asks court to order EFCC to return his $9.8m, £74,000 seized from his Kaduna home

Former NNPC boss, Andrew Yakubu, has asked the Federal High Court in Kano to issue an order compelling the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC to return the $9.8 million and £74,000 recently seized from one of his homes in Kaduna state. In a suit filed by his counsel, Ahmed Raji, SAN, Yakubu asked the court to set aside the ordered granting FG ownership of the money discovered at his home on February 3rd. According to Vanguard, Yakubu argued that the court lacked the jurisdiction to grant FG ownership of his money. The court paper in part reads “No aspect of the perceived offence in respect of which the Order of February 13, 2017 was made, was committed within the Kano judicial division of this Honourable Court”. “By Section 28 of the EFCC Act, only the commission, i.e. the EFCC has the vires to seek an order for the interim forfeiture of property under the Act. The power of this Honourable Court to make interim forfeiture order(s) pursuant to sections 28 & 29 of the
