T.B. Joshua as a parable for MMM

Image
Abimbola Adelakun Thursday with Abimbola Adelakun, aadelakun@punchng.com There is a line from a play by Kola Onadipe that I read in primary school, Halima Must Not Die, that returns to me on days like this one. In the play, someone had asked the lead character why she allowed herself to be deceived by religious charlatans who were simply milking her for her money. She responded, “If you cannot get the truth to buy, won’t you buy a lie?” As I type this article about an ongoing moneymaking scheme in town called MMM, and the General Overseer of The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations, Pastor Temitope Balogun Joshua, I am aware that there can be no objective definition of “truth” or “lie” in either case. Here and there, Nigerians talk about MMM, some kind of “wonder bank” where you invest some money and within weeks, you get a 30 per cent return. The scheme is apparently popular and a few people in my circle ar

Singer Justin Bieber, 22, on Saturday evening partied with six girls in his hotel suite after his live performance at the O2 Arena Prague in the Czech Republic. He reportedly placed an ad on  Facebook through a local modelling agency employee known only as Daniela. The ad asked for eight girls to party with Bieber within an hour, at downtown Hemingway Bar in the Czech capital shortly after his gig but only 6 showed up because of the short notice. When the news made rounds on social media, one of the girls who responded to the ad, a law student Anna, explained that a confidentiality agreement had been put in place, forbidding anyone from talking about their evening with Justin - but insisted it was 'not like people thought it was.' 'You think that he chose the girls to enjoy the night with them, but he wanted to give someone else a pleasant experience. He talked to us as a normal person would,' she wrote. Ben Carson rules out serving in the Trump adminstration because he has no political experience

The TV host Armstrong Williams, who is a close friend of Carson, told The Hill that Carson was not interested in serving the administration in any official capacity, although he would consider a more informal role of an advisor in all White House going ons. Williams also denied reports that Carson had been offered a role, adding that “he was never offered a specific position.” “Dr. Carson feels he has no government experience, he’s never run a federal agency. The last thing he would want to do was take a position that could cripple the presidency,” he said. Mark Zuckerberg Continues to Miss the Point on Facebook and Media

He may not want to admit it, but his company is the most powerful media entity in history. As critics slam Facebook for the role they believe it—and in particular its penchant for fake news stories— played in the election of Donald Trump, CEO Mark Zuckerberg continues to resist any attempt to pin some of the blame on his company. But in doing so, he misses the point. Over the weekend, the Facebook co-founder took to the site to respond to some of those criticisms. He said he “cares deeply” about the fake news problem and wants to get it right. But he also said that he doesn’t believe fake news contributed to the election’s outcome. “Of all the content on Facebook, more than 99% of what people see is authentic,” Zuckerberg wrote. And since only a very small amount of those hoaxes relate to politics, and an even smaller number related to Clinton specifically, he argued that “this makes it extremely unlikely hoaxes changed the outcome of this election in one direction or

'Atiku Abubakar haunted by his corruption demons' - Nasir El-Rufai

Image
F ormer Vice President Atiku Abubakar in his recent interview with EFCC quarterly magazine, Zero Tolerance, reacted to the allegations of corruption leveled against him by Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in his book, "Accidental Public Servant". In the book, El Rufai accused Atiku of using his office as Vice President for corruption and self aggrandizement.  Atiku in an interview with EFCC, reacted to El-Rufai's allegation by accusing the governor of offering him shares in Transcorp Ltd when he was still VP.  He said he turned down the offer because it was unethical for him as a VP to be a shareholder in a company formed by the government.  Atiku says this act and many others are pointers to the fact that he is not corrupt.  In a swift reaction to Atiku's claims, El-Rufai released a statement titled "Atiku haunted by his corruption demons". In the statement, El-Rufai denied Atiku's claims of offering him shares in Transcorp
