‘Cell phone towers in space’: Startup Kepler Communications plans first Canadian nanosatellite launch

Image
A Toronto nanosatellite startup with its sights set on the telecommunications market announced it will launch its first satellite from India in November on the same rocket that launched a record number of spacecraft in the country earlier this week. Kepler Communications Inc. contracted Netherlands-based Innovative Space Logistics to arrange its inaugural mission from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on the polar satellite launch vehicle that deployed 104 spacecraft in a single mission on Monday, shattering the Russian Space Agency’s previous record of 37 satellites. It’s a major milestone for the two-year-old startup that aims to eventually launch the world’s largest constellation of low-Earth orbit nanosatellites for use in telecommunications. “In the most basic sense, we’re putting up cell phone towers in space that can pick up signals from on the ground and from assets in space,” Kepler CEO Mina Mitry said Thursday. Mitry, who left the PHd program at the University of Toro

Donald Trump blasts ‘out of control’ media, detractors at combative news conference: ‘I inherited a mess’

Image
President Donald Trump on Thursday aired his grievances against the news media, the intelligence community and his detractors generally in a sprawling, stream-of-consciousness news conference that alternated between claims that he had “inherited a mess” and the assertion that his fledgling administration “is running like a fine-tuned machine.” “To be honest, I inherited a mess,” Trump said, in a news conference that lasted more than an hour and was at times rambling, combative and pointed. “It’s a mess. At home and abroad, a mess. Jobs are pouring out of the country.” Yet moments later, the president seemed to acknowledge the widespread reports of turbulence and upheaval emanating out of his West Wing, only to claim that his White House – which so far has been marred by staff infighting, a controversial travel ban, false statements and myriad leaks – was operating seamlessly. “I turn on the TV, open the newspapers and I see stories of chaos – chaos,” he said. “Yet it is the ex

Democratic states work to thwart President Donald Trump's initiatives

Image
Maryland lawmakers recently gave the state attorney general the authority to sue the Trump administration – on anything the state's top lawyer wants. Nevada lawmakers are hard at work on legislation to expand voter registration and protect voting rights, a preemptive move to counter what majority-party Democrats in the state legislature believe is a looming Trump "voter suppression" effort. And sunny California is establishing itself as a veritable liberal oasis in Trump-land, providing extensive assistance to immigrants without legal status while negotiating legislation that would make the world's sixth largest economy a so-called "sanctuary state" further protecting the undocumented. Call it the Revolt of the Blue States, a legal and legislative effort by Democratic legislatures and governors to thwart initiatives by President Donald Trump and the GOP-controlled Congress on a wide swath of issues. From health care to immigration to climate change, Trump

"The boy, Pogba, he's a bit of a free spirit, a bit of a character. But I think it was a little bit over the top tonight - before the game and at half-time. Image
Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola has admitted it will be difficult to catch up with Premier League leaders, Chelsea. The Citizens are now just eight points behind leaders Chelsea after extending their unbeaten run to five games. Manchester City defeated Bournemouth 2-0 on Monday night to close gap to eight points. The Catalan told post-match conference, “It’s so difficult because they have to lose three games. “You have to win all the games and you know how difficult it is to win all the games in the Premier League. We have to do is game by game: now the cup and after we’ll see but we’re so happy. “Last season before the game against Swansea, we were fifth in position and finished third. Now, before the game, we’re five in position; now we’re second. “The gap between second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth is nothing; if you lose a game, you’re going to go below. But of course we’re so happy to be second position and reduce the gap a little bit, the distance from Ch

British govt rejects call to ban Trump from meeting the Queen

Image
The British Government on Tuesday rejected a petition which argued that receiving the new president as a guest would embarrass the Queen. The British foreign office recommended President Trump “should be extended the full courtesy of a state visit’’, but lawmakers are still to debate the petition in parliament on Feb. 20. The petition, which stated that Trump should be allowed to enter Britain as the Head of the U.S. Government, but should not be invited for a state visit, which would involve a reception by Queen Elizabeth II, garnered 1.8 million signatures. “Donald Trump’s well documented misogyny and vulgarity disqualifies him from being received by Her Majesty the Queen or the Prince of Wales,’’ the petition read. The British parliament is planning to debate the petition on Feb. 20, alongside a counter-petition set up a few days later which argued that Trump should indeed make a state visit to Britain. According to the British parliament, he is the leader of a free world and

Iran To Continue Commitment On Nuclear Program Deal.

Image
Iran is implementing the deal on its nuclear program agreed with world powers, the head of the U.N. atomic energy watchdog said on Tuesday, amid concerns the United States will try to alter the terms. The United States has taken a tougher stance on Iran since President Donald Trump took office on Jan. 20, including saying it had put the Islamic Republic “on notice” last month over carrying out a ballistic missile test. Under the 2015 accord between Tehran and six world powers, Iran agreed to curb its nuclear program in exchange for relief from some U.S., European and U.N. economic sanctions. Iran has always said its program is purely for peaceful purposes. Trump’s administration is considering insisting the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) toughen its policing of Iran’s compliance, including demanding access to military sites, sources have told Reuters. The United States would need support from the 34 other countries who sit on the IAEA board of governors for mili

Why we won’t release Buhari’s audio call with Trump – Presidency

Image
The Presidency has said that it will be “undiplomatic” to release President Muhammadu Buhari’s telephone conversation with President Donald Trump of United States as request being made in some quarters for the release of the audio containing the conversation. The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu said releasing an audio containing telephone conversation between two presidents is highly unethical and against modern day civilization. He said, “No, I don’t think so; I don’t think it is permitted in international diplomacy. I think if we had recorded Mr Trump in this conversation it would have offended our diplomatic relations. “I think the Americans themselves would not have recorded this conversation of president to president.” Shehu, who noted that there was no enough time for the two presidents to discuss other continental and international, however, expressed optimism that the conversation would boost the bilateral relations between Nigeria

Jose Mourinho is building the foundations at Manchester United: Don Hutchison

Image
Former Liverpool and Scotland midfielder Don Hutchinson has insisted that Jose Mourinho is “building the foundations” at Manchester United this season. The Portuguese endured a difficult start to life at Old Trafford that saw his Man United side fall nine points behind fourth spot by early December. But following a superb resurgence over the Christmas period, United are now just two points off fourth spot and four behind second-placed Manchester City. And Hutchinson, speaking earlier this week, made it clear that the 54-year-old was heading in the right direction at Old Trafford. “He is building the foundations,”  he said. “When you look at the Chelsea side that he had – they went so long with an unbelievable home record, literally like years and he is doing the same thing at Man United. “When you think this time next year, they are going to be so much better. Mkhitaryan’s numbers at Dortmund were 20 odd assists and 28 goals whatever it was, he was on fire at the wee
