Drake has seemingly been making attempts to squash the beef between h

Gambia: “I won’t quit as president”, Jammeh insists

Image
President Yahya Jammeh on Thursday in Banjul reiterated his stand that he would not step down as Gambian leader when his mandate ends on Wednesday. The information ministry said in a statement read on national television that Mr. Jammeh was planning to remain in office until the Supreme Court decides on a petition he filed. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Mr. Jammeh is challenging the result of the December 1 presidential election he lost to Adama Barrow. Mr. Barrow, a former real estate agent who was little known before he announced his candidacy, meanwhile has also reiterated he is planning to take office on January 19, as scheduled. Earlier this week, Gambia’s dysfunctional Supreme Court adjourned hearing Mr. Jammeh’s petition to Monday, since only one of a required minimum of five judges were present. Experts however believe it will be highly unlikely that four additional judges will be present on Monday. This is because the Supreme Court has not been operatio

HEALTH: The right tests at the right time can prevent cervical cancer – Nini Iyizoba

Image
It’s a New Year again so let me start by wishing everyone a Happy and Healthy 2017. January is Cervical Cancer Awareness month and it’s only right to raise awareness about the disease; what it is, what causes it and how it can be prevented. In Nigeria, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer-affecting women, second only to breast cancer. It is a disease in which cancerous cells form in the tissues of the cervix. To describe it in the simplest form, the cervix is part of the female reproductive system and is located between the vagina and the body of the uterus (womb). Cervical cancer usually develops slowly over time. Before you can have cervical cancer, the normal cells of the cervix would usually go through stages where the normal cells slowly start changing to become abnormal. This is known as cervical dysplasia. Most times these abnormal cells would progress into cancerous cells to become cervical cancer. There are usually no signs or symptoms associated with cervica

Presidency clarifies Nigeria’s relationship with Taiwan

Image
A day after Nigeria’s foreign affairs minister said “Taiwan will stop enjoying any privileges (from Nigeria),” the presidency clarified Nigeria’s stance on the matter. Geoffrey Onyeama had at a news conference on Wednesday said “Taiwan will stop enjoying any privileges because it is not a country that is recognised under international law and under the position we have taken internationally we recognise the people of China.” “Taiwan will not have any diplomatic representation in Nigeria and also they will be moving to Lagos to the extent that they function as a trade mission with a skeletal staff,” the minister said. In its reaction to media reports of the minister’s statement, the presidency on Thursday said Nigeria had not cut ties with Taiwan. Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, in a statement in Abuja on Thursday said the correct position is that the official relationship between Nigeria and Taiwan has been at the level of tr

WHAT OBAMA'S FAREWELL MESSAGE TEACHES US!

Image
OBAMA'S MISTAKE POLITICS IS ABOUT POWER. WHEN WE LOSE SIGHT OF THAT, WE LOSE. Barack Obama's farewell speech was basically an awards-show medley of his greatest hits. He spent most of Tuesday evening playing the riffs and hitting the notes that we've become accustomed to over the past 13 years or so — fragments of sepia-toned American mythos, paeans to its democracy and people. (It's one of the ironies of his presidency that Obama was so often accused of disliking what was distinctive about America when he's so obviously in love with it.) Aside from a brief, atypically explicit rejection of the idea of post-racial America, there wasn't much to mark this speech as different from many others he's given. It's a speech that reflected Obama's political identity — and his fundamental misunderstanding about the nature of politics that led to many of his failures. Obama is right when he says that "democracy does require a basic sense of sol

Mayweather Offers McGregor $15m To Fight With Him

Image
Former welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather said Wednesday he was “interested” in a fight with Conor McGregor and had already offered the mixed martial arts star $15 million to climb into the ring with him. Mayweather, who retired in 2015 with a perfect 49-0 record, told ESPN’s First Take program that a McGregor bout was the only thing that could tempt him to end his exile from the ring. The 39-year-old was responding to a question about whether he would consider a rematch with Filipino star Manny Pacquiao following the duo’s much-heralded “Fight of the Century” two years ago. “Only thing I’m probably interested in is the Conor McGregor fight,”  Mayweather said.  “I’m a businessman and it makes business sense. I believe in what me and (business adviser) Al Haymon talk about every day — I believe in working smarter, not harder.” Mayweather revealed initial talks with McGregor’s representatives had taken place, but stalled. “We tried to make the Conor McGregor fight,”  Ma

US deploys radar in response to North Korea missile threat

Image
The United States has deployed high-tech radar to keep watch for a potential North Korean long-range-missile launch in the coming months. It is the first U.S. military response to Pyongyang’s claim that it could launch an intercontinental ballistic missile. The sea-based X-band radar (SB-X) is able to track the long-range launches and provide crucial data, according to U.S. Department of State officials reported the CNN. The radar, whose home port is in Hawaii, has deployed several times in the past to monitor North Korean missile activity. However, it can only remain at sea for a certain, undisclosed, period of time, so military officials try to calculate the most significant times, the official said. Generally, the SB-X is sent north of Hawaii and stationed about halfway to Alaska for the optimum spot to track a potential North Korean missile launch headed for Alaska, Guam or the West Coast of the United States. Additional surveillance assets are being identified to mon

Image
South Africa’s National Traditional Healers Organisation (THO) has warned its members to restrain from having sexual intercourse with patients in an attempt to heal them with sperm. The warning comes after a 43-year-old Traditional Healer, Phaladi Mahlaba raped a 16 year old girl who had visited him for medical consultation. According to the THO statement, it stressed that traditional healers cannot use sperm to treat their patients coming for consultation. 'As a traditional healer, you cannot use a sperm to treat or heal any of your patients. This is a crime and as an organisation, we do not tolerate such an act. The law should take its course. As healers, we have been warned…Such an incident will not be tolerated as it damages the image of the organisation. Although we have power over our patients, this does not allow us to abuse them and ask for sexual favors….All members are warned to be careful to avoid breaking the law'. 24-year-old becomes Zambia's first female fighter pilot

Image
24-year-old Second Lieutenant Thokozile Muwamba became Zambia’s first female fighter pilot after completing her training with the country's Air Force. Muwamba joined the military in 2012 and pursued her dream career of being a pilot after she quit as a first year student at the Copperbelt University (CBU). "Men are not a competition but counterparts that one should work with, and hence women should begin to participate and realise their abilities. Because of this understanding, I am ready to undertake this task ahead of me," she told Times of Zambia last week. "I look at the fact that when I am in the aeroplane, the aircraft knows no sex as it depends on my input even if I am a woman. I can also give it the right steering for it to respond correctly," Muwamba added. Brigadier-General Kapungwe, who is the commander of the ZAF base in Mumbwa, said having Second Lieutenant Muwamba as the first female fighter pilot is a clear illustration that women were prog

Super Eagles captain and former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel explained why he accepted to move to Chinese Premier League to team up with Tianjin Teda. He said it was done to help Nigeria’s push to be at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Mikel had been primarily snubbed from playing with the first team by Chelsea Coach, Antonio Conte, but he still remained a regular for the national team So he decided to move to Tianjin Teda on a three year deal so that he could get some playing time. Mikel said during an interview with Owngoalnigeria.com: “I could easily have stayed in Chelsea for the remaining six months of my contract but it won’t be in the best interest of my nation, as they need me match fit when the World Cup 2018 qualifiers resume”.  “It wasn’t an easy decision to make but I seriously need matches to stay fit for Nigeria. Nigerians don’t deserve to miss out of the World Cup after back to back failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations”. Adding that he didn't do
